A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso. Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M. San Diego still has three draft picks unsigned, including first-round choice Antoine Cason, third-round selection Jacob Hester and sixth-round pick DeJuan Tribble. Source: San Bernardino County Sun Chargers’ safety preparing for sophomore season with new focus SAN DIMAS - Eric Weddle woke up the morning of April28, 2007 knowing his life would never be the same by day’s end. His collegiate career at the University of Utah was just too good for the first day of the NFL draft to pass without a phone call.
What he didn’t tell anyone that day, not even his own family, was that his wife learned she was pregnant the same morning. “Watching my little baby girl get born January 7, that’s probably the most amazing and the best moment of my life, ever,” Weddle said, “until we have another one.” Ask the 23-year-old how his life has changed the most since he became a Charger and he will not point to the football field, but to 5-month-old Brooklyn Marie Weddle. While the off-season headlines showed the Raiders’ Javon Walker getting robbed in Vegas, and the Titans’ “Pacman” Jones becoming a Cowboy named Adam, Weddle was at home with his wife and daughter. Chargers sign WR Mark Jones
Source: PA SportsTicker
Terms of the deal were not disclosed for Jones, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. Jones returned 12 punts for 143 yards, with a long of 35, with Tampa Bay in 2007 before having his year cut short with a knee injury that landed him on injured reserve on October 24. ?Mark?s versatility was very attractive to us,? San Diego general manager A.J. Smith said. ?He?s an experienced NFL punt returner and a solid player who will raise the level of competition in our camp.? Source: USA Today Tight end Scott Chandler is willing and ready. The Chargers hope they don’t have to play the Chandler card often in the upcoming season. But the fact remains with training camp starting next month, the team has yet to see Pro Bowler Antonio Gates on the field. Gates is still bouncing back from toe surgery, an injury that severely restricted him in the playoffs last season. There is no guarantee Gates, who suffered a dislocated toe, will be ready to go when the Chargers open the season on Sept. 7 against the visiting Panthers. But remember that old adage of how someone being down jars open a door for someone else. Chandler, entering his second year, is that someone. Source: USA Today The Chargers, and particularly their quarterback, Philip Rivers, must chuckle. The talk leading up to the U.S. Open at San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course was about how Tiger Woods could play so soon after knee surgery. That’s arthroscopic surgery, a relatively minor procedure. Why the smiles from the Chargers? Rivers played in an AFC Championship Game with a torn ACL in his knee. That required major surgery after the season, but he’s already taking nearly every snap in the offseason workouts. When Rivers first got hurt, he said he would return quickly. But he’s surprised many by getting back under center so soon. Sphere: Related Content Inside Slant - 06/06/08

The team signed former Raider and 49ers Jeremy Newberry, a two-time Pro Bowl center, just in case Hardwick?s injury isn?t healed by the regular-season opener. Newberry, a 10-year pro, could fill in for Hardwick after his rehabilitation got a late start by not undergoing surgery until well into the offseason. Newberry will compete with Cory Withrow as Hardwick?s possible early-season replacement. ?Obviously, if Nick was 100 percent and wasn?t injured, we probably wouldn?t be in this position,? coach Norv Turner said. ?But he isn?t 100 percent. ?Again, we expect Nick to be healthy and we expect Nick to be ready to go. Things happen in this game and Jeremy is a guy that fits our needs at this time.? Sphere: Related ContentInside Slant - 06/04/08

No more. What was once a weak link in an explosive offense deserves spotlight all its own. It’s transformed from being a potential liability to a real team strength. The Chargers will trot out Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson as their top two wideouts, and when was the last time that position had so much talent? The offensive lineman joined the San Diego Chargers for an offseason workout on Tuesday, a day after signing a one-year contract. ?I wanted to be down here. I?ve already played for the two other California teams,? said Newberry, a two-time Pro Bowl center while with San Francisco who played last year with the AFC West rival Oakland Raiders. ?Obviously, the Chargers are the best team out there. I wanted to stay halfway close to home and have a chance to win a championship and this fit both of the bills for me.? Newberry was signed as insurance in case center Nick Hardwick isn?t ready for the start of the season. Hardwick had surgery on his sprained right foot on March 14. The team said at the time that he would need four to six months to recover. Sphere: Related Content |
